Verhaeren - La guirlande des dunes.

A windmill in Flanders, by A-D Steinlen     E mile Verhaeren, poet of these discreet Flanders, rich with ancestors such as Vésale or Rubens, has sung his country as nobody. La Guirlande des Dunes can be considered as the real begining of Toute la Flandre. It is a tribute to this littoral, to these landscapes with their harsh climat which have shaped men in their image.
Aimé-Daniel Steinlen, son of this secret North and great nephew of the famous aquafortist and drawer Théophile Alexandre Steinlein, was bound to meet his brother from "cieux belgiques" (Belgian skies), quoting an expression contemporary with the poet.
Engraving 20 copperplates colored dabbed by Francine et Jean Cappelle, and lithographying 30 bandeaux and tailpieces, he expresses all the secret emotion of these maritime Flanders.
Hand set in foundry type 24 point Roman Centaur, the edition consists of 150 numbered copies on finest papers: Moulin de Larroque and Vélin d'Arches. Each engraving is signed by the Artist.
The work in quarto royal size (25 x 32 cm) was printed on Pierre Jean Mathan's press. It is presented on loose leaves in a Bernard Duval box.
