Verhaeren - La guirlande des dunes.
E mile Verhaeren, poet of these discreet Flanders,
rich with ancestors such as Vésale or Rubens, has sung his country as
nobody. La Guirlande des Dunes can be considered as the real begining of
Toute la Flandre. It is a tribute to this littoral, to these landscapes
with their harsh climat which have shaped men in their image. Aimé-Daniel
Steinlen, son of this secret North and great nephew
of the famous aquafortist and drawer Théophile Alexandre Steinlein, was
bound to meet his brother from "cieux belgiques" (Belgian skies),
quoting an expression contemporary with the poet.
