Hérédia - Sonnets

The Centaur

Published for the centenary of José Maria de Heredia's introduction into the French Academy, these sonnets, master piece of the parnassian mouvement, are accompanied by 18 original illustrations.
François Maréchal, member of San Fernando's Royal Academy in Madrid, was bound to meet the flaming speech poet, both having the same French-Spanish double culture.
In his 7 lithographs and 11 engravings on copper, all of a powerful lyrism, François Maréchal achieves the miracle of touching our imagination with his own vision of Heredia's poetic world.
Each engraving dabbed by Francine et Jean Cappelle is signed by the Artist.
The 7 lithographs adorning the chapter headings and the text in two colours, hand set in foundry type 16 point Garamond on finest papers : Vélin de Rives and Johannot, were printed on Pierre Jean Mathan's press.
Printed at 180 numbered copies, the work in quarto royal size (25 x 32 cm) is presented on loose leaves in a Bernard Duval box.
