Aimé-Daniel
STEINLEN was born in Saint-Amand-Les- Eaux in
the North of France. His family boasting no less than three painters, his way
was already marked. Thus, after a year studying medicine, he
enters the National School of Art. Drawing teacher, printer, Art book
illustrator, worthy successor to his great uncle Theophile Alexandre STEINLEN
-drawer, engraver and lithographer- he inherited from him the love of his fellow
men and the mastery of the portrait.
In a few
brush strokes or by the bite of his burin,
he shows everyone in the light of their inner reality, thus proving the
superiority of painting over the instantaneity of photography. But this man form the North is also a
wonderful colorist, especially known for his painting, finding in the
peacefulness of his house in the Vendée "the wide open spaces
of Flanders, with light as well", quoting his own words. His
favorite themes are the maritime scenes, the wide horizons under an autumn sun
against which are etched the wind-swept branches of trees and deep plowed
fields holding the sweat of Man and waiting for alchemy of winter.
His
work
appears in many French and foreign collections and he has participated in
numerous exhibitions and fairs all around the world.
For the
Editions
Carrés d'Art, he illustrated "La
Guirlande des Dunes" by Verhaeren,
"Hier et Aujourd'hui", and
"Torchères" by Hervé
Bazin.
A.-D.
STEINLEN departed on the 13th of
december 1996 to join his fellow Poets, Painters and Artists and to continue
with them the eternal dream of creation. This website is dedicated to him with
respect and affection.
